மாதொருபாகன்(Maatorupaakan)-Perumalmurugan

Even after finished reading this book, the characters and their situations are still daunting me.I really don't know why.Normally after reading the book i will take 2 to 3 days off and start reading my next book but after this book i started reading the next book immediately because im not able to stop thinking about Kaali (the main character).

I came to know about this author Perumalmurugan through his many short stories specially "நீர் விளையாட்டு ". I too like his essays on Madurai district collector Saagayam . I was very much interested in reading his book "கூளமாதாரி (Seasons of the palm)" but unfortunately or rather fortunately i got this book from India.I read this book mostly during lunch hours and it was a wonderful read, finished the book in 4 days but the thoughts remains till today.

First, the name of the book "மாதொருபாகன்" i never heard this word in Tamil in my life before, i have to accept that.Luckily and thanks to the author, the book itself gives clear explanation for this name.
"Maatorupaakan is one of the name of Lord Shiva,in this idol He appears in Man-Woman combination. The right half is Parvathi Devi and the left half is Lord Shiva, which indicates there is no man without woman, and no woman without man.All are equal."
This is the pre-independence story of Kaali and his wife Ponna in Thiruchengode,Salem district. They were married for 12 years but without child. The author beautifully brings the life in those days, the village settings with its caste hierarchy and farmers day to day activities.Kaali, the young and energetic , was brought up my his mother.Through hard work they were able to sustain the land's goodness and other properties for years.Muthu was his close friend from childhood.Muthu was from next village. They both enjoyed their time together specially Muthu who had a special talent to identify unique places in forests and outskirts.Whenever Kaali visited Muthu's home he took special interest in Ponna.

Ponna ,the sister of Muthu, was the only daughter for her parents.Initially they considered her as lucky charm  and she was the one who gave seeds for seeding during seasons. She was beautiful. She too had seen Kaali many times with her brother but she never thought of marrying him.The author reveals at the end about Ponna's infatuation towards Sathi during her teenage days but she was very faithful to Kaali after the marriage.

Both Kaali and Ponna were happy about their life even without children. But the village people made fun and mockery of them. They called them with different names and made their life a struggle specially for Ponna.Every time she went out with  neighboring women they treated her as a second class so she set herself alone from the rest of the village women.Kaali too stopped going out with other youths and spend the whole day in farm.

The story takes a turn when Kaali's mother and Ponna's parents along with Muthu decided to force Kaali to allow Ponna to go to the Tiruchengode temple festival. This festival was unique-on the penultimate day of the 15 days feast, women without children and other women go in search of  'saami(சாமி)'.All men on this particular day becomes  'saami(சாமி)' and they can have sexual relationship with any girls ,of course with girl's consent. No one knows no one, so its easy to go ahead without thinking about the community's gossip and if the girl gets pregnant and gives birth the child will be called diety's child(சாமி கொழந்த).

Kaali who loved Ponna so much, did not interested in sending Ponna but on that particular day Muthu took him to the forest and they both drank and slept there itself.Ponna was desperate to have a child, even though she loved Kaali so much she agreed with his parents and went with her mother to the festival and after some search she found Sathi and they both went into the darkness. The novel ends with Kaali woke up in the early morning and went to look for Ponna in her house, finding her house locked, he cried and returns to his farm.
I have so many questions :
     1)Will Kaali do suicide ?
     2)Will he accepts Ponna ?
3)Will he accepts the child, if Ponna gives birth?
4)Will they have their normal sexual life as before?
Still wondering about these questions and trying to figure out answers.

The author takes us to the festival through his wonderful and lively description. He brings the old Tiruchengode alive with local dialect and culture.Hats off Sir. Most importantly he brings the struggle and community settings of those days in regards to childless couples.I think these kind of treating the childless couples is still relevant in many places of Tamilnadu.Nalluypaiyan chithappa,Muthu and Kaali's grand-father Sadaiyappan are some of the memorable characters in this book.

A great read.

Beethoven's Moonlight sonata is one of my favorite morning time listening.Beethoven completed this wonderful piece in 1801 and it remains one of the all time great piano composition. Its also called as "Sonata quasi una fanatasia".

A sonata consists of three parts :
1)Adagio sostenuto
2)Allegretto
3)Presto Agitato

I liked the "Allegretto" part more because it is wonderfully set by Adagio and followed by Presto Agitato. The last part is bit fast and that makes this piece a complete one.

Its breathtaking and beautiful.Enjoy this awesome music.

Conversation between Einstein and Tagore

EINSTEIN :Do you believe in the Divine as isolated from the world?

TAGORE :Not isolated. The infinite personality of man comprehends the universe. There cannot be anything that  can not be subsumed by the human personality and this proves that the truth of the universe is human truth.I have taken a scientific fact to explain this- Matter is composed of protons and electrons with gaps between them. But matter may seem to be solid.Similarly humanity is composed of individuals, yet they have their interconnection of human relationship, which gives living unity to man's world.the entire universe is linked up with us in a similar manner,it is a human universe.I have pursued this thought through art, literature and the religious consciousness of man.

EINSTEIN :There are two different conceptions about the nature of the universe.1)The world as a unity dependent on humanity.2)The world as a reality independent of the human factor.

TAGORE :When our universe is in harmony with man,the eternal,we know it as truth,we feel it as beauty.

EINSTEIN :This is purely human conception of the universe.

TAGORE :There can be no other conception. This world is a human world-the scientific view of it is also that of the scientific man. There is some standard of reason and enjoyment which gives it truth ,the standard of the eternal man whose experiences are through our experiences.

EINSTEIN :This is realization of the human entity.

TAGORE :Yes,one eternal entity. We have to realize it through our emotions and activities. We realized the Supreme Man who has no individual limitations through our limitations.Science is concerned with that which is not confined to individuals;it is the impersonal human world of Truths.Religion realizes these Truths and links them up with our deeper needs;our individual consciousness of Truth gains universal significance.Religion applies values to Truth, and we know this truth as good through our own harmony with it.

EINSTEIN:Truth ,then,or Beauty is not dependent of man?

TAGORE : No.

EINSTEIN :If there would be no human beings any more , the Apollo of Belvedere would no longer be beautiful.

TAGORE : No.

EINSTEIN: I agree with regard to this conception of Beauty, but not with regard to Truth.

TAGORE : Why not? Truth is realized through man.

EINSTEIN :I can not prove that my conception is right, but that is my religion.

TAGORE: Beauty is in the ideal of perfect harmony which is in the Universal Being; Truth the perfect comprehension of the Universal Mind. We individuals approach it through our own mistakes and blunders, through our accumulated experiences, through our illumined consciousness — how, otherwise, can we know Truth?

EINSTEIN: I cannot prove scientifically that Truth must be conceived as a Truth that is valid independent of humanity; but I believe it firmly. I believe, for instance, that the Pythagorean theorem in geometry states something that is approximately true, independent of the existence of man. Anyway, if there is a reality independent of man, there is also a Truth relative to this reality; and in the same way the negation of the first engenders a negation of the existence of the latter.

TAGORE: Truth, which is one with the Universal Being, must essentially be human, otherwise whatever we individuals realize as true can never be called truth – at least the Truth which is described as scientific and which only can be reached through the process of logic, in other words, by an organ of thoughts which is human. According to Indian Philosophy there is Brahman, the absolute Truth, which cannot be conceived by the isolation of the individual mind or described by words but can only be realized by completely merging the individual in its infinity. But such a Truth cannot belong to Science. The nature of Truth which we are discussing is an appearance – that is to say, what appears to be true to the human mind and therefore is human, and may be called maya or illusion.

EINSTEIN: So according to your conception, which may be the Indian conception, it is not the illusion of the individual, but of humanity as a whole.

TAGORE: The species also belongs to a unity, to humanity. Therefore the entire human mind realizes Truth; the Indian or the European mind meet in a common realization.

EINSTEIN: The word species is used in German for all human beings, as a matter of fact, even the apes and the frogs would belong to it.

TAGORE: In science we go through the discipline of eliminating the personal limitations of our individual minds and thus reach that comprehension of Truth which is in the mind of the Universal Man.

EINSTEIN: The problem begins whether Truth is independent of our consciousness.

TAGORE: What we call truth lies in the rational harmony between the subjective and objective aspects of reality, both of which belong to the super-personal man.

EINSTEIN: Even in our everyday life we feel compelled to ascribe a reality independent of man to the objects we use. We do this to connect the experiences of our senses in a reasonable way. For instance, if nobody is in this house, yet that table remains where it is.

TAGORE: Yes, it remains outside the individual mind, but not the universal mind. The table which I perceive is perceptible by the same kind of consciousness which I possess.

EINSTEIN: If nobody would be in the house the table would exist all the same — but this is already illegitimate from your point of view — because we cannot explain what it means that the table is there, independently of us.Our natural point of view in regard to the existence of truth apart from humanity cannot be explained or proved, but it is a belief which nobody can lack — no primitive beings even. We attribute to Truth a super-human objectivity; it is indispensable for us, this reality which is independent of our existence and our experience and our mind — though we cannot say what it means.

TAGORE: Science has proved that the table as a solid object is an appearance and therefore that which the human mind perceives as a table would not exist if that mind were naught. At the same time it must be admitted that the fact, that the ultimate physical reality is nothing but a multitude of separate revolving centres of electric force, also belongs to the human mind.In the apprehension of Truth there is an eternal conflict between the universal human mind and the same mind confined in the individual. The perpetual process of reconciliation is being carried on in our science, philosophy, in our ethics. In any case, if there be any Truth absolutely unrelated to humanity then for us it is absolutely non-existing.It is not difficult to imagine a mind to which the sequence of things happens not in space but only in time like the sequence of notes in music. For such a mind such conception of reality is akin to the musical reality in which Pythagorean geometry can have no meaning. There is the reality of paper, infinitely different from the reality of literature. For the kind of mind possessed by the moth which eats that paper literature is absolutely non-existent, yet for Man’s mind literature has a greater value of Truth than the paper itself. In a similar manner if there be some Truth which has no sensuous or rational relation to the human mind, it will ever remain as nothing so long as we remain human beings.

EINSTEIN: Then I am more religious than you are!

TAGORE: My religion is in the reconciliation of the Super-personal Man, the universal human spirit, in my own individual being.

The above conversation between the two great men was taken from the book "Science and the Indian Tradition:When Einstein met Tagore". More about the book in following updates.

Bertrand Russell's 10 Commandments of Teaching

The famous British Philosopher Bertrand Russel listed 10 commandments of teaching. He wrote many books on Mathematics and philosophy .Here is the list :

  • 1. Do not feel absolutely certain of anything.

  • 2. Do not think it worth while to proceed by concealing evidence ,for the evidence is sure to come to light.

  • 3.Never try to discourage thinking for you are sure to succeed.

  • 4.When you meet wit opposition, even if it should be from your husband or your children, endeavor to overcome it by argument and not by the authority, for a victory dependent upon authority is unreal and illusory.

  • 5.Have no respect for the authority of others , for there are always contrary authorities to be found.

  • 6.Do not use power to suppress opinions you think pernicious for if you do the opinions will suppress you.

  • 7.Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.

  • 8.Find more pleasure in intelligent dissent than in passive agreement, for ,if you value intelligence as you should, the former implies a deeper agreement than the latter.

  • 9.Be scrupulously truthful, even if the truth is inconvenient, for it is more inconvenient when you try to conceal it.

  • 10.Do not feel envious of the happiness of those who live in a fool's paradise, for only a fool think that it is happiness.

A Shot At History - Abhinav Bindra & Rohit Brijnath

This is the story of Abhinav Bindra, India's only individual Olympic gold medalist. I bought this book because of Rohit Brijnath, the best sports writer in India, in fact one of the best in the world. I can see his influence in this book.He is the one guy who will makes you to read the whole story without making you get bored.A pure writing genius.

Comeback to the book,Abhinav is very honest and comes out of his comfort zone and discusses many aspect of his game -Shooting.For me it was a learning experience of a game which i have never interested before.Bindra tried every possible ideas and techniques over the years to perfect his art. From drinking Yak milk to Military Commando training , he undergone everything.Even though he did not receive enough support from Indian officials ,he did not give up but it made him to work harder and prove his talent.

His coaches and parents played vital role in his success. His parents were full support to him irrespective of his results. His German coaches nurtured him like their own and he was able to adopt their style of coaching.Like Sachin , he also tries to get into the 'zone' before every shot.I think each and every athlete have their own zone ,which gives them clearer picture of his mental state and clarity in their action.Uwe , one of his trainer wrote a beautiful letter after Abhinav's disappointing Athens Olympic games, the following lines shows how good he was and whats need to be done to be successful next time.
Nothing wrong with your technique , nothing wrong with the gun ...just empty!
--
Be focus but not intolerant...
---

In the  penultimate chapter "Mr Indian Official:Thanks for Nothing", Abhinav sums up the state of Indian sports particularly the manner in which managers and officials treat the players. In one paragraph he summarize it :
"It was athletes often touch the feet of officials in India,I am a traditional Indian, but that seems plain wrong. As if the athlete is accepting his future lies in official hands, instead of in pure performance. As if the official believes he controls the athlete. It sets the wrong tone for the relationship. This is supposed to be an equal relationship not a deferential one.Eventually, only scores matter , not patronage."
He also acknowledges that his parents are well financed to support him but the money alone can not bring success. He worked really hard for his success. This is the lesson an athlete must learn, to experience and enjoy the journey not just the success.

A must read for aspiring athletes.I hope in London Olympics 2012 , India will win more medals than the previous Olympics.

*Boxed quotes are taken from the book.

Mesmerizing Monday -4

I heard this composition of the great maestro many times in a movie i think it was in the movie "Veedu"  but not the entire composition. I bought this album "How to name it?" four years before, since then atleast once in a week i listen the whole album specially on monday morning. This particular composition "How to name it?" is the celebration of violin's divine sound.I read somewhere that this composition has mixture more than 2 ragas? never mind who wants those details, music must take us to next level thats what this piece does.

Ilaiyaraja is a real genius who brings the divinity to the music, this composition is one such example of his brilliance. For me i can listen this composition any time of the day irrespective of my mood.It just soothes.Still Ilaiyaraja is not getting is due honors, pathetic. If he would have born in some other country , he would have been celebrated far more than what we are doing now.Read in papers that Ilaiyaraja's children are planning to release a remastered version of this album and perform live on stage  on 25th anniversary of the release of this album, waiting for it.

Listen to this wonderful piece and celebrate the maestro..

I Too Had A Love Story - Ravinder Singh

The reason why i chose to read this book was that when i asked the book sellers at the Airport almost all of them told that this book is the bestselling Indian author book in recent times.A true love story . A simple and beautiful story. The story is nothing new but the way the author portrays it, is good. This is Ravinder Singh's first book so we can excuse him for his shabby writing at some parts.

The story starts with the reunion of 4 friends who are working in different MNCs. They share everything and discusses about their next stage in life which is marriage. There starts the story of the author. After returning from his reunion ,he registered in shaadi.com ,after unfruitful days , he received a message from a girl from Faridabad.Kushi, the girl and Ravinder from Bhubaneswar starts their whirlwind love through SMSes and phone calls.

Without meeting in-person they became stronger in their love and desperately wanted to get marry. They informs about their love affair to their parents who agreed and decided to arrange for engagement on Feb 14.The day was decided by Kushi who insisted Ravin for the special day.As they were preparing for the big day Kushi met with an accident and was admitted in a hospital.Ravin rushed to the hospital only to see his beloved Kushi in ICU and in dangerous situation.Unfortunately , Kushi died of various complications.

The author wonderfully and realistically brings the pain of the loss of loved one, at certain point you feel like crying with the author. His honesty in telling this story is visible in many places. The first part of the story i.e the initial romance period was wonderful , dont expect literary quotations or awesome phrases, but he uses a typical Indian english effectively. While reading you will definitely feel that Ravinder Singh had put his heart and soul to share his real experience with us.Well done Ravinder.

Those who did "love" marriage, this book will bring back those wonderful moments- the first kiss, the first hug and the first "alone-in-room" experience , the first "lie" to parents etc.And those who are in a relationship with a girl will feel very very bad and sad about the ending of this story.

Overall a nice read ...!!
