My Earth Hour

Day:28/march/2009

Even though i knew about Earth Hour before it was only when I saw a advertisement in which the number 60 is designed in globe, under it there was a site url www.earthhour.com i registered myself in that site.In Singapore they organized some events at Esplanade Park. There were some shops/booths like Starbucks,Old Chang Khee,Philips ,ACRES.We took picture in a booth, where they used recycle material for making cards.

The events started at 5 O'Clock but we reached there only around 6,that time there were around 100-200 people sitting around that area. As the sun went down the view of Esplanade, the bridge,UOB buildings was awesome. We walked around the bridge and took some pictures near the famous Merlion. At 8:15 we sat near the stage now the crowd grown around thousand, people started lighting candles. There was a countdown from 5 to 1 at 8:29:50   oops!! Most of the lights of those big buildings including the Esplanade went off.We were sitting in the dark.It was wonderful(!!) to see those buildings without light for an hour. This act has saved atleast some amount of energy. In TamilNadu as per Times Of India report 750MW of power was saved during Earth Hour.
Still we need to do a lot to Save our Planet. Do register in that site and show your support

My Last Three books

1.The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

One of the best novels i have ever read. The Story revolves around a monastery and its uniquely designed library. This is the story which brings that period before our eyes. The conversations between the two main characters William the master and Adso his disciple are wonderful. This book is a classic example for semiotics. The plot and the characters are lively. If the reader knows little bit of christianity then it makes even more interesting.

The story is about the murders happening at the monastery which is very famous for its library. The novice monks who are so keen to know the details of library specially the forbidden books are murdered.William, who came to the abbey to make arrangements for the meeting of Papal council and Franciscans, was asked to conduct inquiry by the abbot. How William reveals the murderer is the story of this book...

Read it .. you will definitely enjoy.

2.Turtle Feet by Nikolai Grozni

This book i bought when at the Airport, just by looking at the cover i bought this book. After the mysteries and puzzles of "The name of the rose" this books made me laugh just like that. This book is memoir of the author when he was a Tibetan Buddhist monk. This book describes the life of the author when he decided to become a monk. The author vividly describes the life of Tibetans at Dharmasala and its surroundings.

I liked the part in which the author shares his room with his friends Czar and others. Czar was a free man, in fact as im reading i had a strong feelings of Czar's character occupying me...little.
The escape plan of Czar was so funny you cant stop laughing for some days... As for the spiritual aspects there are so many things in this book.

Read it for fun...

3.White man Falling by Mike Stocks

This is a different genre .. simply fun,fun and more fun. This book won "Gosh First Novel Award" really worthy of it. This book i bought along with the previous book"Turtle Feet".
The reason why i bought this book was that the story is around Madurai and Tamilnadu.

The story is about Mr.Swaminathan, retired police officer and his town Mullaiapuram. The author brings the exact middle class Tamil family behaviors .Hilarious .. fun..
when im reading the book i thought if i take this novel as a motion picture i would cast Tamil actors "Delli Ganesh' as Mr.Swami,Sachhu as Amma,Nagesh as DDR,Thiagu as Abu,Metti oli villain Aathi as Mohan, any heroine as Jodhi.
This author has written many poems also.

Fun,Hilarious .....

Steve Bucknor - The "Slow Death"

I watched Steve Bucknor during the 1992 World Cup,Australia from that time onwards i have some sort of a likeness towards his personality both on and off the field. He and Shepherd are the two old fashioned umpires who always believed in their own judgment. Indians have a different look on him since he gave few wrong verdicts against them. The one wrong verdict which i considered worst by Bucknor was the LBW decision against Sachin in Australia.

He is referred as Slow Death Bucknor because of his way of giving out.He used to take lot of time to decide, his typical slow reaction will stay in my memory forever.

He told once "I have made mistakes and this is a part of life,How you see things at that time, you rule on it. So I do not regret making mistakes because if I regret making mistakes then I am going to regret being a human being." another time "I believe if you are correct 95% of the time it's seen to be okay, which means 19 out of 20 correct. So you try your best to be correct every time. But there are times when things happen that you don't see, you don't know, and mistakes are made."

Umpiring is a tough job that too in this technological world.we have all the replies ,slow motion, tracker everything,so as a viewer we tend to judge everything most of the time correctly also.Bucknor told "Even commentators who think that they know so much about cricket, they are so critical of umpires. Some of them [say], no that is wrong, but this is after they have seen 10 replays. The job is a difficult one, and sometimes made more difficult by the comments from these personalities on television and radio." I dont think technology can replace an on-field umpires any time soon.we have to respect the umpires decisions.

The three umpires i like most are Shepherd,Bucknor and Simon Toufel. Shepherd retired some years ago.now its the time for Bucknor join his friend.

Bucknor's last Test match as umpire will be at Capetown,Australia Vs South Africa and his last Limited Over International will be at Carribean Islands on March 27&29,WestIndies Vs England.

Have a great retired life Mr.Bucknor!!

Tamil Kavithaigal

As Im reading so many Tamil blogs lately,i came across these 2 poems which i liked so much.
